Hello everyone,
Looks like my post got all of attention.I thought it was important enough to post if people's zones are going to be changing.
Julie, no mine is still 8 or they said 8a (never really understood the a).I wonder about all the seed & plant catalogs, did they have this info when their 2012 catalogs came out?
Lisa,so far your the only one i've heard of who's changed.I have been talking to people down south,so i wonder if the majority of the changes took place in the colder places (up higher on the map)?
Eva,(i think it was you) I'm going to check out that link!!
Good day all, Jelinda
P.S. I have a post about my prayer plant if anyone hasn't seen it and knows anything about plant reverting to a different variety, please let me know what you think. Thanks |

I caught you guys on the site this morning but was notified by another site about the zone change but in south ga it seems I now am supposed to be 8a and was 8 looking at it the 8 is now closer to the coast but it doesn't matter because 8 has always been perfect for us here and closer to 9 not 8 it seems. So for me I think I'll stay with the old way....sorta like them changing dog days of summer ...I like the old way .....more correct. Have a blest day folks and happy gardening.

I know a couple people down south whose zones have changed. Mine is kind of whacked out anyways, with the lake right here. |

Hello all,
I am still zone 8 only they added an "a" after it.Never have really understood what difference the letters make. If anyone could explain that I would really appreciate it. |

a vs b indicates either the cooler half or the warmer half relative to the zone number specification. you'll be more likely capable of growing a zone 6 plant in 5b than in 5a, for instance. just have to baby it more. |

Thank you Chris,
So "a" is the cooler part of your zone and "b" would be the warmer part of your zone.I'm in zone 8a so i may be able to grow plants zoned for 7 with some babying and plants for 7b even easier!!??
Thanks a lot for clearing that up for me!!
I hope i'm not jumping the gun because of your username but hoping you know a lot about composting. What kitchen scraps are a no no for my compost pile? I just started it towards the end of last summer.Recently i have realized my grandson has been helping put things in it without me present.I found orange peels and a whole potato,i think he took out of my potato bin.I was wondering about the orange peels are they a no no or is it ok to add them?
Have a lovely day |

The USDA Hardiness map is a map of coldest average temps. It might be extremes. Either way, it's colder in 7 than in 8. You should be able to grow any plants in 8 that could be grown in 7, from a lowest temperature perspective. Going the other way is the kicker. You can't grow orange trees in zone 5 outside year round because it gets too cold. They'd have to be taken inside once temps start dipping.
I believe the whole a/b thing keeps the USDA from having to have zone 1 - 24 instead of zone 1 - 12, or whatever the full range is. If they did that, all plant knowledge that has ever been written would instantly be outdated because zone 7 might then really be what 3b is today. Then there would be conversion charts and labeling changes on plants and every book on plants would have to change. Borders fluctuate from time to time because of various things. But generally, they remain the same. Adding the a/b designation just gives us a more defined range to live within. i think you can probably ignore the whole a/b designation if you wanted to.
As for compost, it's my belief that anything that grows out of the ground can go back into it. Some things will take a while longer to rot away, but they will go. Potatoes and orange peels are fine. Orange peels may not be so great in a worm bin, though. I wrote a whole FAQ on the topic several years ago and it's located down in the Compost and Organics forum. i suggest reading that and posting down there if you have any compost questions. |

WOW! Eva that a great site! I book marked that one. I like how it states both USDA AND Plant Map HArdiness Zone, as we are often colder than what the USDA Zone states for my area. I will definately be exploring this site more!! Diane |
