I am a first time poster. I have tried everything at every time of the year to get rid of crab grass. I'm now digging up the crab grass areas and re-seeding. Is there an easier way? Denver CO

I was hoping someone closer to your area would respond but I'll give this my best shot. Crabgrass is a reseeding annual that here usually germinates in early June. Unfortunately you probably have a pretty good seedbank built up in the soil. Your best bet is to get a good thick lawn going to provide enough shade to the soil to keep the crabgrass from germinating. Once you have lawn established you can apply pre-emergent herbicide labeled for crabgrass to keep it from germinating, but you can't apply it when seeding a new lawn as it doesn't differentiate between grasses. If you prefer not to use a synthetic herbicide you can apply corn gluten meal but it can take 2 to 3 applications over the same number of seasons to achieve good control. I would check with your county extension service for best practice in your area. Wishing you luck.
