I need to know if and when to trim my roses; and by how much? Also can you cut back a clematis, I've always been told you will kill a clematis if you cut it back. Mine looks wild and unkept. So if someone can help me I will be greatfull.

    Barbara,
    Welcome to the boards,
First off where are you located?
Location is the key to both your questions..What I can do and do here in Oregon , in other parts of the country one would do at different time.
So please come back on to the boards and tell us where you live so we can better help you.

I second what Melanie said. Where you live totally depends on how you proceed. Some areas it will already be too late to trim, and you need to wait til next spring. Others, you still can. So, if you prune and it is not the right time of year, you could end up killing your rose. Location is everything.
