Attached are photos of a nice young tree or shrub that has sprouted in one of my flower beds. This is the 2nd year for it. It has green leaves which darken to this lovely burgundy. as they age. Any ideas on this?

    Thanks for the help!

Dizzy,  does the shrub/tree have any other features that would help, like flowers later.  The burgandy leaves look different in shape than the green ones.

Dizzy, sorry I don't know what this one is but it certainly is interesting. I hope you're able to id it.

Cleomepoppy, I think you're referring to the hardy geraniums, not to be confused with pelargoniums or what we commonly grow as annual geraniums.

If the young tree/shrub blooms, it must be too young to do so, as it hasn't so far. The leaves are the same shape, and turn burgundy as they mature, while also spreading more into small branches. It's lovely, but just doesn't belong in my flowerbed. Don't want to move it until I know what it is & what it needs to grow.

Cleomepoppy, those flowers are indeed Hardy Geraniums, also called Cranesbill.  That one is Geranium x riversleaianum, I also have Himalayan Geranium, Lilac Cranesbill 'Johnson's Blue'
    Geranium
and Geranium himalayense 'Birch's Double' ( a darker purple and DOUBLE blooms!). They are indeed hardy and spread quickly.

At first glance it tends to look like lettuce, or

    Hi DizzyDaff ,

Thanks for the info on the hardy Geraniums i did look them up from the links too. the one i have is the same as the one you have in the pic with what you are trying to get ID... so it is the cranesbill geranium? Mine looks like the variety called 'Rozanne'... here is a link of that with the pic if you want to see: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/22166/  I wish the pic of the flowers on this one called Bloody Cransbill were closer as i cannot decide between these two exactly... so here is the link for the one i am also referring to: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/150/ the flowers on mine are bluish purple. Thank you for your help with this and really you do not have to help me further unless you want to-- Of Course!!! i did add a pic in in case it helped and you wanted to see it.

I'm So Sorry i cannot help you withyour plant ID!!! I've showed it to some other gardening friends too and they have no ideas either. I do Very Much Hope that you get it ID!!!!

    Thanks So Much!!!

I Hope You Have A Great Day!!!

Nice pics. Check out Smokebush & Copper Beech tree. for the baby shrub. Most shrubs / trees take a good 6-10 years before flowering. It looks very similar to both of those, although not perfectly identical. I would lean more toward Copper Beech though because Smokebush has smooth leaves, & the way they curl etc. reminds me of beech.
